When Seconds Count, Safety Comes First
Through Kane County Farm Bureau and a program called Harvest for ALL, local farmers provide proceeds from crops to help local food banks. Harvest for ALL helps restock local food pantries, promotes goodwill for the agriculture industry, and reminds the public where all food originates. It's another way for family farmers to fight hunger in Illinois.
2010 was a record year across the U.S. for grain bin accidents. Unfortunately, the number of deaths and injuries from grain entrapments has also increased in recent years.
A grain engulfment can occur in the following conditions. It only takes seconds for a person to be suffocated in any of these situations:
• When an employee stands on moving grain, which acts like quicksand and buries the worker.
• In a “bridging” condition, grain is clumped together due to moisture or mold, leaving an empty space underneath. An employee standing on top or below the bridge can be buried when it collapses.
• While standing next to a steep pile of grain, a worker can be buried when it collapses.
When a grain bin accident occurs, it is a serious, emergency situation, and local fire and paramedics teams are called in to assist. Standard safety procedures involve using rescue tubes and cutting holes in grain bin panels.
Because of our long-standing commitment to safety, Elburn Cooperative has donated to the following organizations:
DeKalb County Farm Bureau: Grain bin rescue training
Grundy County Farm Bureau: Ag Health, Safety and Education
Kendall County Farm Bureau: Liberty Rescue Vac (Oswego Fire Protection District)
Kane County Farm Bureau: Harvest For All
Elburn Cooperative has also donated to the following fire districts as an annual sponsorship to assist in purchasing the necessary grain rescue tubes:
Kaneland Public Fire & Safety Foundation
Maple Park Fire Department
Newark Fire & Ambulance Department
We encourage all of our employees and patrons to please put safety first when working near and handling grain.
